There are lots of harmful chemicals you need to avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding!
It can be difficult to avoid toxins during pregnancy and breastfeeding – partly because there are so many of them! In fact, an EWG study found an average of 200 harmful chemicals such as pollutants in newborn babies.
Almost everything which you ingest can pass to your baby! That’s why we’ve singled out 7 of the most important chemicals for you to avoid during pregnancy and nursing.
1. Parabens
Parabens can interfere with your hormones. Its effects have been proven to include poor fertility, abnormal foetal growth and even miscarriage.
Parabens are normally used to extend the shelf life of most cosmetics. That’s why you should be checking your ingredient labels! (We know, almost everyone doesn’t do it). If possible, you should try to use simpler treatments with more natural ingredients.
2. Bisphenol A (BPA)
Bisphenol A (BPA) can be found in plastic food containers or soda cans. It can enter the body when you consume food or drinks from these containers. Unfortunately, BPA can result in miscarriage.
Tip: Whenever you use a plastic container, make sure that it’s BPA-free.
3. Wall paint
Chemicals in wall paint release a distinctly pungent aroma. If you accidentally inhale too much, these toxins can cause miscarriage and affect the growth of your baby’s nervous system.
To avoid these toxins, you should try to stay away from wet paint as much as possible during pregnancy. Postpone your home repainting project for the time being!
4. Synthetic perfume
Synthetic perfume is normally found in your soap, makeup and skincare products. It will be challenging, but you should try to avoid products which contain synthetic perfume. Chemicals found within such as phthalates and white musk can hurt your baby’s health.
As an alternative, try using natural fragrances such as essential oils. However, please remember to consult your doctor before using these oils!
5. Retinoids
Although retinoids come from Vitamin A, they can interfere with your baby’s growth in the womb. (Don’t worry, Vitamin A is fine by itself.) You can normally find retinoids in facial care products. You might also find them in anti-aging and whitening creams.
Natural alternatives like vitamin C and glycolic acid exist, and are much safer for pregnant and breastfeeding mums!
6. Acetone liquid
Do you often use nail polish remover? It’s probably time to stop. Acetone can cause foetal defects and fertility disorders if you overexpose your body to it.
Try to find acetone-free nail care products during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
7. Unnecessary or unprescribed medicine
Ironically, unprescribed medicine could be your most harmful chemical. When you’re pregnant, breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy, a lot of normal chemicals can actually be harmful. Always avoid over-the-counter medicine, and make sure you consult a doctor first.
In conclusion…
Chances are, you won’t be able to avoid all the harmful chemicals for pregnant and breastfeeding mums. However, avoiding these 7 harmful chemicals should put you on the right track to a safe and happy pregnancy. 🙂
