4 Tips on How To Get Healthy Teeth and Gums

Healthy teeth play a big role in your overall health.  Caring for them when you’re pregnant is simple. Just follow these tips:

Brushing your teeth after every meal is better, but brushing twice daily is fine.

Just be thorough! You’re supposed to brush for two minutes, giving all your teeth (and your tongue) the TLC they deserve. Brush the front, back, and chewing surfaces of each tooth.

Remember to be gentle when doing this. It may seem like a good idea to exert some force into your brushing. But this will only make your gums bleed.

You should also consider using non-fluoride toothpaste like Mama’s Choice Non-Fluoride Toothpaste (more about this below!). While dentists say fluoride is perfectly fine for pregnant mamas, we know you want to play it safe. Non-fluoride toothpaste is gentle for sensitive teeth and won’t harm your baby.

Floss Regularly

Brushing your teeth with non-fluoride toothpaste isn’t enough, even if you brush more than twice daily. It only cleans the surface. Flossing, on the other hand, can reach the areas in between your teeth. You’ll be surprised to see just how much leftover food your toothbrush missed!

Floss once a day to prevent bacteria buildup, gum disease, and bad breath.

Eat Right

Mama, sugar cravings are real and hard to resist. We know.

You don’t have to give up your favorite cheesecake completely, but eat it in moderation for your and your baby’s sake. You can get your sweet fix from guilt-free but equally yummy snacks like fresh fruits and yogurt.

Too much sugar can cause tooth decay, which is something you don’t want to deal with in addition to morning sickness. You also want to eat the right food so that your little one will be strong and healthy.

Continue Visiting Your Dentist

Ideally, you should see your dentist every six months. That shouldn’t change when you’re a mama-to-be!

In fact, it’s even more important to have a dental appointment now. Since your body is going through hormonal changes, you can be at higher risk for oral health problems.

It’s fine to have any urgent procedures done as well. Just consult with your obstetrician first for any instructions to follow.

Also, let your dentist know that you’re expecting and give them a list of any medications you’re taking. This way, they can make sure that you and your baby are safe.
