How To Use Breast Milk Storage Bags: 6 Tips To Remember

Breastfeeding is one of the most challenging parts of being a new mama, including pumping breast milk. However, after you’ve figured out how to extract milk comes the challenge of storing it properly. In this article, we will give you a complete guide on how to use breast milk storage bags properly!

Unfortunately, there are many things that you need to learn about storing breastmilk. But as mamas, there is nothing that we would not do for our little ones, right?

It can be complicated and overwhelming at first, but we are sure you will get the hang of it. We have compiled five practical tips that you can follow to help you get started.

Breastmilk Storage Tips

Collecting breastmilk is not an easy feat. But, with these tips, we are sure that you will be on your way to ensuring that not one drop of it will not be maximized.

1. Label your bags

The first thing that you should do is grab a permanent marker to label your breastmilk bag. Some important information you need to provide is the date and time when you collected the milk.

This will set you up to ensure that the breastmilk is stored and fed to the baby within the proper time frame.

2. Watch the clock.

Speaking of maintaining a proper time frame, you should keep in mind the time limit for various types of breast milk. Here is a table to help you keep track of the hours.

Freshly Collected Milk

  • Room temperature – Up to 4 hours
  • Refrigerated – Up to 4 days
  • Frozen – Up to 6 months (best quality) or 12 months (acceptable quality)

Thawed

  • Room temperature – Up to 2 hours
  • Refrigerated – Up to 24 hours

Aside from this, remember that you should not refreeze breast milk after it has been thawed already. This is because the milk has already been exposed to contaminants that can foster bacterial growth.

4. Thaw milk properly.

Now that you know how long breastmilk can be stored in various phases, you can focus on correctly thawing frozen milk.

The first option is to let it sit at room temperature. This may take as long as 24 hours, but it’s a safe way to defrost milk.

On the other hand, you may also place your breastmilk storage bag in warm water. Again, ensure the water is warm enough to thaw but not boil.

5. Dispose of milk properly.

As previously mentioned, thawed milk is only good for up to two hours. If your baby cannot finish the bottle by then, you will have no choice but to throw away the milk.

We recommend using smaller bottles, as you can always give your baby more milk if needed.

6. Prepare your travel essentials.

Let’s face it, you and your baby will eventually leave the house at some point. That’s why it’s important to prepare all of your essentials beforehand.

Ensuring that your breast milk stays in good condition depends on one crucial thing: having the right milk storage bag.
